APPLICATIONS OF DEFLAZACORT: Deflazacort is used to treat Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD; a progressive disease in which the musclesdo not function properly) in adults and children 2 years of age and older. Deflazacortis in a class of medications called corticosteroids.

HOW TO USE: Deflazacort comes as a tablet and asuspension (liquid) to take by mouth. It is usually taken once a day with orwithout food. Take deflazacort at around thesame time every day. Follow the directions on your prescription labelcarefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do notunderstand.HOW DEFLAZACORT WORKS: It works by reducing inflammation (swelling) andby changing the way the immune system works.

CONTRAINDICATIONSOF DEFLAZACORT: If you are allergic to deflazacort or similarmedicines.

If you have an infectionand you are not taking any anti-infective medicine. If you are having orrecently had any vaccination with a live vaccine. Taking deflazacort during earlypregnancy may increase the risk of cleft lip and palate in a newborn.  

PHARMACOKINETICS OF DEFLAZACORT: Deflazacort is a corticosteroid prodrug with an activemetabolite, 21-deflazacort, which binds to the glucocorticoid receptor to exertanti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects on the body.

SIDE EFFECTS OF DEFLAZACORT:  headache, thin, fragile skin, red or purple blotches or lines under theskin, increased hair growth, acne, bulging eyes, irregular or absent menstrualperiods, slowed healing of cuts and bruises.

PRECAUTIONS: This medicine may increase your risk of developingblood clots. Check with your doctor right awayif you or your child have swelling and pain in your arms, legs, or stomach,chest pain, shortness of breath, loss of sensation, confusion, or problems withmuscle control or speech.
