HOW TO USE: Baclofen is typically taken orally, with or without food. The usual starting dose is 5 mg taken three times daily. The dose may be gradually increased under a doctor's supervision to a maximum of 80 mg per day, depending on therapeutic response.
HOW BACLOFEN WORKS: Baclofen works by activating GABA-B receptors in the brain and spinal cord, which inhibits the transmission of nerve signals causing muscle spasticity. It reduces involuntary muscle stiffness and spasms, improving mobility and function.
PHARMACOKINETICS OF BACLOFEN: Baclofen is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, with peak plasma levels occurring in 23 hours. It is partly metabolized in the liver and excreted primarily via the kidneys. The half-life is about 26 hours.
SIDE EFFECTS OF BACLOFEN: The normal side effects caused by Baclofen are Drowsiness, Dizziness, Weakness, Fatigue, Nausea, Headache, Hypotension (low blood pressure), Rarely: confusion, seizures (in withdrawal), hallucinations.
PRECAUTIONS: Avoid abrupt discontinuation to prevent withdrawal symptoms. Use with caution in patients with renal impairment, epilepsy, or psychiatric conditions. Avoid alcohol and CNS depressants while on Baclofen. Dose adjustments may be needed in elderly patients.
